  • Description

The new Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, General Nematollah Nassiry, presented his credentials to the Pakistani President Fazal Elahi Chaudhry in Rawalpindi on Sunday (23 July).

SYNOPSIS: The ceremony was held in the Presidential Palace. There are close ties between Pakistan and Iran and earlier this year, the Shah of Iran held talks with the Pakistani military leaders during an official visit to the country.

General Nassiry arrived in the Presidential coach. He was appointed as ambassador following his dismissal from the post of head of the Iranian State Security Police. Savak. He is a personal friend of the Shah and one of the Iranian leaders's closest military advisors. General Nassiry, aged 70, is known to have been a hard-liner in matters dealing with internal security during the 14 years he headed Savak. Diplomatic sources in the Iranian capital, Tehran reported that his new appointment signified the importance Iran attaches to its relations with Pakistan.

Inside the palace, General Nassiry was greeted by President Chaudhry, officials from the Iranian Embassy and the Pakistani government. General Nassiry's appointment gave rise to speculation in Tehran that the Shah was attempting to appease certain opposition groups in Iran, by dismissing one of the most ardent advocates of tough repression of dissent. During his visit to Pakistan in February, the Shah told Pakistan's military leader, General Mohammed Zia Ul-Haq, that Iran was willing to take 20 instead of 10 years to repay a recent billion dollar loan. Iran is also negotiating with Pakistan on the possible establishment of a South Asian Common Market.
