Background: President Nyerere of Tanzania had talks in Lagos today (Thursday) with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Nigerian Prime Minister, before leaving for Kaduna, capital of Northern Nigeria.The Tanzanian leader arrived in Lagos yesterday to begin a five-day visit.
President Nyerere started his official visit to Nigeria almost immediately after playing host to Mr.Chou En-lai.Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China, who was on a five-day visit to Tanzania.From Nigeria, the Tanzanian President will go on to London for the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference.
Speaking to pressmen yesterday, Mr.Nyerere rejected the suggestion that Mr.Chou's visit to Tanzania showed that Tanzania was leaning towards the Communist bloc.He said Tanzania was making contact with some countries for the first time, but added: "This has no effect on our relations with Britain or any other Western country".
