SYNOPSIS: Highway Four, vital supply link between the Khmer capital of Phnom Penh and the seaport of Kompong Son, was open again on Wednesday after government forces flushed surrounding terrain of communist insurgents. The road had been closed for almost three weeks when a twenty-mile section fell into enemy control.

According to the Khmer High Command the rebel troops simply disappeared, leaving behind empty bunkers dug deep on either side of the highway. But eh heavy fighting, while the communist were in position, caused servers casualties on both sides.

But Highway One, the road leading from Phnom Penh to the South Vietnamese border, is still in communist hands following a recent assault by the rebels, only fifteen kilometres from the Khmer capital.

The Khmer troops are relying on artillery and track-transported mortars to clear Communist bunkers on both sides of the Highway. Unlike the other main routes to Phnom Penh, Highway One passes through dense jungle. This cover, combined with vast areas of water accumulated during the recent monsoon season, has made it impossible for government troops to use heavier armoured vehicles to spearhead a counter-attack.
