    He breasted the tape just a fraction ahead of Robert Bogey of France, who was given the same time, breaking the existing French record for this distance. Judges called for a photograph before awarding the race to the Russian.

    Vaillant of France finished third, nine seconds later. British fans were shocked to see Frank Salvat trail in 11th of the 15 starters.
