  • Description

The first conference of labour ministers from non-aligned and developing nations opened in Tunis on Monday (24 April).

SYNOPSIS: The conference is being held in the Palais de Congress in tunis over four days. Seventy five countries have sent delegates to the inaugural session, which was officially opened by Mr. Winalasend from Sri Lanka, who heads the group of non-aligned countries. The Tunisian Prime Minister, M. Hedi Nouira, is presiding over the conference.

The theme of the conference is the "use and development of human resources". Delegates heard Mr. Winalasena refer in his opening speech to the importance of mapping out the important human and material resources that were available to developing countries. And he also referred to what he termed the "regrettable" withdrawal six months ago of the United States from O.I.T., the International Labour Organisation.
