  • Description

Ken Rosewall, the 36-year-old Australian tennis maestro, turned impending defeat into a glorious victory on the centre court on Tuesday evening (29 June) when he beat 24-year-old American Cliff Richey to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Rosewall won by 6-8, 5-7, 6-4, 9-7, 7-5 in a match which will rank as one of the greatest contests in Wimbledon's history. The duel of chessboard finesse kept a packed centre court crowd spellbound for four hours, and in the closing stages the atmosphere in the huge arena was electric.

When Rosewall hit a backhand return of service to clinch victory on his fifth match point, the crowd erupted with a mighty cheer for the little Australian, who has been runner-up three times, but has never managed to win the Wimbledon crown in his brilliant nineteen year career.
