TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 8): BRANDT : "THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS SOME OF MY VIEWS HERE TONIGHT, AND MAY I PROPOSE THAT THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH WHAT I MIGHT HAVE TO............(INTERRUPTION - "REMEMBER THE V2")..............THAT THOSE WHO WOULD DISAGREE WOULD RAISE THEIR QUESTIONS AFTER I HAVE MADE MY ADDRESS."

TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 10): GAITSKELL: "COULD I APPEAL TO THOSE PRESENT HERE TO GIVE OUR GUEST A FAIR GOING. HE IS SPEAKING NOT IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE AND IT IS NO MEAN FEAT TO MAKE A SPEECH IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. IT IS QUITE UNFAIR TO HECKLE HIM IN THIS WAY, AND I AGAIN MUST WARN YOU THAT IF YOU DO INTERRUPT IN THIS WAY I ASK THAT THE POLICE SHOULD REMOVE YOU, SO THAT THE REST OF US CAN LISTEN TO WHAT MR. BRANDT HAS TO SAY."

Background: MAYOR WILLY BRANDT OF WEST BERLIN WAS INTERRUPTED BY DEMONSTRATORS DURING A SPEECH HE DELIVERED IN LONDON, MAR 28. BEFORE THE MEETING AT FRIENDS' HOUSE BEGAN A CROWD OF DEMONSTRATORS WITH PLACARDS MARCHED OUTSIDE THE HALL WAVING SLOGANS LIKE "HITLER'S GENERALS WANT BASES HERE" AND "WE DON'T WANT GERMAN TROOPS HERE".

CHAIRMAN OF THE MEETING HUGH GAITSKELL, THE LABOUR PARTY LEADER, WAS SHOUTED DOWN WHEN HE TRIED TO INTRODUCED HIS GUEST. WHEN HERR BRANDT STARTED TO SPEAK THERE WERE SHOUTS FROM THE AUDIENCE OF "REMEMBER THE V2 SEND HIM HOME" AND "NO WAR OVER BERLIN". AT ONE STAGE HIS VOICE WAS DROWNED BY FOOTSTAMPING, SLOW HANDCLAPPING AND BOOING. SEVERAL TIMES MR. GAITSKELL AND TO APPEAL TO THE AUDIENCE FOR SILENCE. HERR BRANDT TOLD THE NOISY ELEMENTS THAT HE WOULD ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS AFTER HIS ADDRESS:
AT THIS POINT MR. GAITSHELL MADE ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO RESTORE ORDER IN THE HALL.

DESPITE THIS THE SHOUTING CONTINUED AND THE POLICE HAD TO BE CALLED TO REMOVE ONE MAN FROM THE PLATFORM. DOZENS OF POLICEMEN CARRIED ABOUT TWENTY DEMONSTRATORS FROM THE HALL.

HERR BRANDT IS IN BRITAIN FOR A SIX-DAY VISIT.
