  • Description

In Jerusalem, the Prisoner of War issue was the centre of a debate in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) on Monday (December 10), the same day as a group demonstrators called for urgent action to get the prisoners home.

The demonstration was organised outside the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem by members of the Israeli Black Panthers. Collaborating with them were some relatives of soldiers still held prisoners in Syria.

About two hundred people took part in the demonstration which called for urgent action to get the prisoners home or find what had happened to them. The mothers of three missing soldiers presented a note to the U.S. Consul asking for American action on the matter. The demonstrators also called on American Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, to insist on the prisoners' return before peace talks.

In the Knesset, Opposition leader Menachem Begin said the P.O.W. issue should be treated as the most important single issue and no peace conference should be held until it was settled. He said the government had not done enough for the families of the missing.

Defence Minister Moshe Dayan for the government said Israel would not sit at the same peace conference as Syria until it had a full list of Israeli soldiers held captive there.

Israel has accused both Syria and Egypt of the torture and murder of Prisoners of War.
