SYNOPSIS: Prince Fahd had spent three days in Egypt, talking with President Sadat and senior Egyptian Government officials. Observers see his task as bringing Arab leader??? closer together to try and establish a common front in their dealings with israel. One influential Egyptian newspaper commented that the Prince's visit was of particular importance at this time, because President Sadat had now stopped direct contacts with israel.

The Secretary of the Arab League, Mr. Riad - on the right of the picture - attended some of the discussions with the Prince, as did Egypt's Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Kamel.

Crown Prince Fahd, who is Saudi Arabia's First Deputy Premier, left Alexandria on Monday (31 July) and flew straight to Damascus. It is thought he took a personal message from President Sadat to President Assad of Syria. President Assad is strongly opposed to Egyptian peace initiatives. But his position may be closer to Egypt's now that President Sadat has rejected any further direct talks with israel before the Return of all occupied Arab territories.
