  • Description

Dog-sled racing in the United States was a popular sport for many years in those states covered in snow during winter and recently it's been regaining its popularity.

It was in Idaho that the first official dog-sled races were ever held in the United States, and in that state a small but dedicated group of dog-lovers still compete on the snowy courses.

The sports is popular enough to still have official competitions and at a recent meeting 11 teams from three states gathered in the city of Preston. The gods were a mixture. Some of the huskies had long pedigrees, other were refugees from the pound.

The dogs become part of the owner's family -- and as each dog eats about a quart (litre) of food a day it is obvious they are expensive family members.

As recently as the 1920s, the mail was delivered by dog-sled in many parts of Idaho - and it was the mailmen who organised the first dog-sled races.
