  • Description

Windsurfing is one of the world's fastest growing sports. All you need is a surfboard with a sail. But there is a difference from the ordinary sailing craft because you sail standing up. The third international six day championship was held this year in Greece, when participants from twenty-seven countries matches their strength and skills in Hermioni Bay, in the Agean Sea.

SYNOPSIS: The weather proved inhospitable for the visiting contestants on Saturday (27 October), the first day of the championships.

Most competitors had arrived at the beginning of the week for two days of training and practice, followed by a six-mile competition and two day's of slalom races. Then the start of the world competitions.

The sport of windsurfing is said to have the qualities of surfing, sailing and waterskiing, all rolled into one. Having no rudder, a windsurfer has to be steered by manipulating the sail and using your weight to manoeuvre the board.

Good balance and strong arms are obviously an arrest.

The sea was calm, in spite of the rain and overcast sky, for the opening day's programme. A Dutch company was the first to build windsurfers under license in 1972. As the sport quickly gained momentum, schools have sprung up all over the world.

The competitions end on the first of November, when prizes for the winners will be presented.
