  • Description

THE UNITED NATIONS MISSION YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MOVED BACK INTO ITS JERUSALEM HEADQUARTERS, WHICH IT WAS FORCED TO EVACUATE WHEN JORDANIANS STORMED THE BUILDING ON THE 5TH OF JUNE. THE JORDANIANS WERE DRIVEN OUT OF THE BUILDING THE SAME DAY BY ISRAELIS, BUT THE U.N. HAS SINCE HAD TO NEGOTIATE WITH ISRAEL BEFORE THE MISSION COULD RETURN.

THE U. N. HAS OCCUPIED THE BUILDING -- GOVERNMENT HOUSE -- SINCE 1948. PREVIOUSLY IT WAS THE SEAT OF THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONERS FOR PALESTINE. HOWEVER, THE NEW AGREEMENT ALLOWS THE U.N. TO OCCUPY ONLY THE BUILDING ITSELF, WHICH IS SITUATED ON THE "HILL OF EVIL COUNCIL," AND ONE THIRD OF THE SURROUNDING AREA WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN INCLUDED IN THE PREMISES.

ISRAEL HAS GIVEN ASSURANCE THAT IT WILL MAKE NO MILITARY USE OF THE AREA NOT TO BE RETURNED, AND HAS GUARANTEED THE U.N. MISSION UNRESTRICTED ACCESS TO RADIO FACILITIES OUTSIDE ITS NEWLY DEFINED PREMISES. ISRAELI MILITARY POLICE MOVED OUT OF THE BUILDING AS A PROCESSION OF U.N. CARS, INCLUDING THE CAR OF THE MISSION LEADER, GENERAL ODD BULL, BEARING NUMBERPLATE "U.N. 1" DROVE UP.
