  • Description

Frogman Louis Lourmais, 40-year-old French ex-Commando, who entered the Rhine at Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Mar 8, to swim 600 miles down the river - arrived at Rotterdam, Mar 26.

Lourmais received an enthusiastic welcome at his destination and looked well after his long contest with swim currents and heavy barge traffic on the Rhine. His wife Liliane - a keen swimmer who paced him over part of the distance - accompanied him on the last 1,100 yards, and many Dutch frogmen swam out with bunches of flowers to greet them. France's consular representative in Rotterdam, M.Bernard, welcomed the Lourmaises as they came ashore.

His marathon swim lasted 18 days and he averaged coldness of the water by a special outfit -- one reason for undertaking this remarkable feat was to prove that humans can survive in the coldest water wearing protective clothing.
