  • Description

THE AUSTRALIAN SWIMMER LINDA McGILL CLIPPED 25 MINUTES OFF THE WOMEN'S SPEED RECORD FOR AN ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM TODAY(FRIDAY).

MISS McGILL STEEPED ASHORE ON THE JAGGED ROCKS OF ST MARGARET'S BAY, NEAR DOVER, NINE HOURS 59 MINUTES AFTER LEAVING CAP GRIS NEZ ON THE COAST OF FRANCE. SHE TOLD REPORTERS SHE HAD REALLY NO DOUBTS AT ALL THAT SHE WOULD CROSS THE CHANNEL AND BREAK THE RECORD. SHE ADDED: "CONDITIONS WERE IDEAL, EXCEPT FOR THE LAST HALF-HOUR, WHEN THE WIND FRESHENED AND THE SEA BECAME ROUGH."
THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF TEN HOURS 24 MINUTES WAS ESTABLISHED THIS SUMMER BY A 20-YEAR-OLD BRITISH LIBRARIAN, ELAINE GRAY. THE NEW RECORD HAS YET TO BE OFFICIALLY RATIFIED BY THE CHANNEL SWIMMING ASSOCIATION.

LINDA McGILL CAUSED SOME CONSTERNATION WHEN SHE ANNOUNCED SHE MAY SWIM THE CHANNEL IN A TOPLESS BATHING SUIT. BUT OFFICIALDOM WON THE DAY AND SHE EMERGED FROM THE WATER AT DOVER IN A CONVENTIONAL ONE-PIECE OUTFIT.
