  • Description

Two ships of the Japanese Navy arrived in the port of Buenos Aires on Friday (6 August) on an official visit to Argentina.

SYNOPSIS: The two ships are part of Japan's Defence Fleet. They're the training ship, Katori and the destroyer, Nagatsuki. The two are under the command of Rear Admiral Naotoshi Sakonju and they had already visited the Uruguayan port of Montivideo. After their four day visit to Argentina they were due to sail to Santos in Brazil.

Many people from the Japanese community in Buenos Aires waited on the wharves as the two ships docked. The Katori displaces 3,350 tons and has a length of 128 metres (449 feet), while the destroyer Nagatsuki displaces 3,100 tons. Together they have a complement of 540 men, including 160 junior officers in training.

Among the waiting crowds were several Japanese women in traditional costume who were to present flowers to the ship's commanders.

A group of senior Argentine naval officers boarded the two ships after they docked to welcome the Japanese officers and crew.

During their visit the Japanese sailors will inspect the Naval School at Rio Santiago, and visit several monuments to navy officers. They will sail to Santos, Brazil on 10th August.
