    In Sudan large areas of country south of the capital, Khartoum have been devastated by floods which President Jaafar al-Nimeiri has described as "a phenomenon which our country has not experienced in the last century."
    SYNOPSIS: The President wrote about the disaster in an appeal for aid to United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. The worst-hit area is in the E1 Gezira region, which President Nimeiri said was the backbone of the national economy and the most populous region of Sudan. According to the President, half a million people have been made homeless, 100 villages have completely disappeared and 120 others are severely damaged.

    Large portions of Gezira's canal network was washed away, 1.5 million acres (more than 600,000 hectares of cropland was completely submerged and President Nimeiri told the Secretary-General that it would be impossible to plant cotton, the mainstay of Sudan's economy. During two days alone the area received toe and a half times its normal average rainfall.

    However, Dr. Waldheim assured Sudan that ll possible U.N. aid would be made available and since then cargo planes have been flying in with supplies.

    In Geneva the United Nations Disaster Relief Office gave an immediate emergency grant of 20,000 U.S. dollars and the Red Cross said that airlifts of essential supplies would continue. Several countries received requests for assistance through their embassies In Khartoum and various Arab states responded quickly to the emergency. Among others, Kuwait sent food, medical equipment and blankets. All food stores in the area were destroyed and hygiene problems developed as the floodwaters started to recede.
