Background: HUNDREDS OF MOTORISTS IN PARIS AND IN OTHER FRENCH TOWNS INCLUDING BORDEAUZ, METZ, AND THIONVILLE, WERE THE VICTIMS OF PUNCTURED TYRES CAUSED BY NAILS STREWN ON MAIN READS. THE FIRST CALLS TO POLICE STATIONS IN PARES FROM ANGRY MOTORISTS BEGAN AT DUSK ON OCTOBER 29. HUGE TRAFFIC JAMS FORMED AS IMMOBILISED CARS, MANY WITH TWO AND THREE PUNCTURES, WERE PUSHED TO THE SIDES OF THE ROAD.

THE TROUBLE BEGAN IN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES, AND QUICKLY SPREAD THROUGHOUT PARIS, ALONG BUSY ROUTES INCLUDING THE AVENUE DE LA GRANDE ARMEE, THE AVENUE DE NEUILLY, AND THE PLACE DE LA MADELEINE. MANY OF THE NAILS WERE TRIANGULAR IN SHAPE, SO THAT A POINT ALWAYS REMAINED UPPERMOST. NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE, BUT THE DEMONSTRATION HAS BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO THE O.A.S. (ORGANIZATION OF THE SECRET ARMY), WHICH HAS RESORTED TO SIMILAR TACTICS IN ALGERIA.

IN SPITE OF HASTY CALLS TO STREET SWEEPERS THROUGH THE NIGHT, TRAFFIC WAS STILL CHAOTIC THE NEXT DAY, AS MORE MOTORISTS ABANDONED THEIR CARS, FURIOUSLY DEMANDING TO KNOW WHAT IT WAS THE SABOTEURS SOUGHT TO PROVE.

AT MONTE CARLO, A PLASTIC BOMB, BELIEVED TO HAVE SEEN PLANTED BY THE O.A.S, EXPLODED DURING THE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 28/29 OUTSIDE THE FIFTH FLOOR FLAT OF M. PHILIPPE FONTANA, HEAD OF THE RADIO MONTE CARLO NEWS SERVICE. M. FONTANA RECENTLY RECEIVED A THREATENING LETTER FROM THE O.A.S. HE AND HIS WIFE WERE BOTH ABSENT AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION. NO ONE WAS INJURED.
