    JAPANESE AUTHOR YASUNARI KAWABATA, 69, WAS LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) AWARDED THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE IN A GLITTERING CEREMONY IN STOCKHOLM, THE SWEDISH CAPITAL. KING GUSTAV ADOLF PRESENTED THE AWARD TO THE 69-YEAR-OLD WRITER.

    THE NOBEL PRIZE AWARDS, HELD IN THE STOCKHOLM CONCERT HALL, ARE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SWEDISH SOCIETY YEAR. MEMBERS OF THE SWEDISH AND DANISH ROYAL FAMILIES, FOREIGN AMBASSADORS, GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND RELATIVES OF THE PRIZE-WINNERS ASSEMBLED FOR THE CEREMONY, HELD ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF ALFRED R. NOBEL, THE SWEDISH INVENTOR OF DYNAMITE FROM WHOSE FORTUNE THE AWARDS ARE MADE.

    KAWABATA WAS A COLOURFUL FIGURE IN TRADITIONAL DRESS. HE RECEIVED A HUGE OVATION AS HE COLLECTED HIS PRIZE FROM KING GUSTAV.

    THE HALL HAD BEEN DECORATED IN YELLOW AND GOLD CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN HIS HONOUR.
