  • Description

TEAM OF YOUNG AUSTRALIAN SKY DIVERS FROM SYDNEY OVER-CAME A SERIES OF MAJOR DIFFICULTIES TO SET UP TWO NEW PARACHUTING RECORDS AT ALBION PARK, NEAR WOLLONGONG.

ROBIN HORSFIELD, WHO IS 19, JUMPED FROM 16,000 FEET AND FELL TO 2,000 FEET BEFORE OPENING HIS PARACHUTE TO LAND IN LAKE ILLAWARRA. A FEW MINUTES LATE HIS BROTHER, BRUCE WHO IS 24, AND ROBIN GOODWIN ALSO 24, STEPPED OFF FROM THE SAME AIRCRAFT AT 25,000 FEET TO FREE FALL FOR MORE THAN 23,500 FEET.

PREPARATIONS FOR THE JUMP BEGAN EARLY LAST SUNDAY MORNING WHEN MEMBERS OF THE ILLAWARRA MOTOR BOAT CLUB ON LAKE ILLAWARRA TOOK UP POSITIONS AROUND THE LAKE WHERE THE MEN WERE TO LAND. THE CLUB WAS ALSO HELPING IN THE ATTEMPT BY PROVIDING PICK-UP BOATS.

THE FIRST TO JUMP WAS ROBIN HORSFIELD. HE DIVED OUT OF THE PLANE AT 16,000 FEET AND PULLED HIS RIPCORD AT 2,000 FEET. HE WAS THE ONLY SKY DIVER TO LAND AS SCHEDULED AT LAKE ILLAWARRA. ROBIN HORSFIELD IS NOW CLAIMING THE AUSTRALIAN FREE FALL RECORD OVER WATER, WHICH WAS HELD BY HIS BROTHER, BRUCE.

THE SECOND SKY DIVER TO LAND WAS BRUCE HORSFIELD, WHO ENDED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF A NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. BOTH HE AND ROBIN GOODWIN MADE THEIR JUMPS FROM 25,200 FEET. BECAUSE OF A HEAVY CLOUD COVER, BOTH MEN MISSED THE TARGET BY OVER 2 MILES.
