  • Description

The Shah of iran and Empress Farah arrived in Sofia on Tuesday (16 May) for a four-day state visit aimed at boosting trade between Iran and Bulgaria.

SYNOPSIS: The Shah and Empress Farah were greeted at Sofia airport by the President of Bulgaria and Communist Party leader, Mr. Todor Zhivkov and his wife. This is the Shah's third state visit to Bulgaria in 12 years. Economic and trade links were expected to dominate discussions between the two leaders. Iran is becoming one of Bulgaria's major trading partners outside the Communist world.

The volume of trade between the two nations is expected, by economic observers, to exceed 160 million dollars this year and the two leaders were due to discuss details of a long-term trade pact. According to Bulgarian sources, the talks were also expected to cover disarmament matters, the Middle East and ways of achieving effective world peace. But the visit was not given over entirely to business. While the leaders talked, Empress Farah visited several social centres in Sofia.

On Friday, the Shah is due to visit Hungary for talks with President Pal Losonczi. Western observers see the visits as a sign that Iran is keen to strengthen trade ties with the Soviet bloc.
