Background: A Lancaster bomber in the wartime livery of the British Royal Air Force Bomber Command made a commemorative flight today (Friday) to mark the twenty fourth anniversary of the raid that breached the Mohne and Eder dams east of the Ruhr in West Germany.

The aircraft took off from Biggin Hill in Kent and flew to the R.A.F. station at Scampton, Lincolnshire, wartime home of the Number 617 Squadron "The Dam Busters".

On board the bomber for the flight were several former members of the squadron who took part in the raid on the dam.

The first raid was started on the night of 16/17 May, 1943, Nineteen Lancasters took off from Scampton on that raid which caused havoc to German industries along the Ruhr valley, Only eleven of the bombers returned. They were commanded by the late Wing Commander Guy Gibson, holder of the Victoria Cross, shown in our film introducing crew members to the Late King George the Sixth.

On board the Lancasters was the invention of Dr Barnes Wallis -- the bouncing bomb -- designed to skip across the surface of the water and sink at the dam's base.
