  • Description

Renewed rioting broke out in Belfast, Northern Ireland tonight (Tuesday) for the sixth consecutive night, as about 100 youths in a Catholic area attacked British troops. The rioting occurred in the Ballymurphy area, where soldiers used CS tear gas and faced a hail of paving stones from rioters during last night's disturbances. In last night's fighting ten soldiers were injured by flying stones and bottles.

The violence resumed last night after the funeral of a Catholic teenage rioter, shot dead last Friday by an army marksman. The attacks began in Ballymurphy but soon spread to the other main Catholic areas of Andersonstown, New Lodge Road, Springfield and Falls Road.

The tear gas was used as soldiers charged repeatedly at about 150 demonstrators. But in another area soldiers ended rioting when they drove straight in and seized a block of flats. A British Army Captain was asked why these tactics had not been used before.

Temporary field hospitals were set up to care for soldiers wounded during the rioting, and the rioters set up their own refugee stations for women and young children.
