"We appealed to both sides for the ceasefire and we invited them to a meeting and so far, we have succeeded in bringing them together to the first meeting. But, unfortunately, as a result of the continuation of the fight in the North, a second meeting was cancelled."
Mr. Riad was later asked if the League's peace-keeping force in Lebanon was making any progress. He replied, "It is purely a force to restore peace. It cannot perform its duty while fighting continuing and ceasefire calls are being ignored." Mr. Riad is the Head of an Arab League Commission whose two other members are the Bahrain and Tunisian Foreign Ministers, both of whom have also returned home after the unsuccessful peace efforts.
