  • Description

The 62-miles (100 kms) stretch of road being constructed by Nigerian Army Engineers between Kaduna and Pambegwa, Northern Nigeria, is well on the way towards completion. soldiers are working in force clearing and preparing the surface for its final top dressing of tar and chippings.

Work began almost a year ago after the project had been initially deferred because of the rainy season. The entire roadworks is expected to be completed by April next year.

Just before work on the road commenced the Nigerian Army Chief of Staff, Major-General David Ejoor urged officers and men of the 2nd Engineering Construction Regiment - who are carrying cut the work - to tackle the assignment with diligence and efficiency and to regard it as a challenge not only to themselves but to the Nigerian Army itself. He said the men should regard the work as their own contribution towards the national reconstruction programme.

The road is being built to the Nigerian Federal Government's requirements which are based on international standards. The road, when completed will be a 24 feet (7315 metres) carriageway.

The Army is using modern equipment for levelling, and preparation for the tar and stone surface, but the major work of ridding the route of boulders, rocks and rubble is being undertaken by hand by the large work force of soldiers.
