  • Description

PAINTINGS OF FISH ARE NOT UNCOMMON. BUT THESE FISH WEREN'T PAINTED IN THE USUAL WAY. THE ARTIST, JULIE BOOTH, PAINTS UNDERWATER.

SHE GOES DOWN TO THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN TO FIND HER SUBJECTS...LIKE THIS PIECE OF CORAL. IT'S IN VIVID BROWN AND BRICK RED TONES...AND JULIE BOOTH DECIDES IT'S WORTH PAINTING.

JULIE BOOTH WENT FROM SYDNEY TO LORD HOWE ISLAND FOR HOLIDAYS. SHE WAS NO IMPRESSED BY THE ISLAND SHE'S NOW RETURNED THERE TO LIVE. COLD WINTER WATERS DON'T DETER THE ARTIST AS SHE SETTLES DOWN TO PAINT, TWENTY FEET BELOW.

SHE DOESN'T PAINT ON CANVAS - BUT ON SPECIALLY TREATED COMPRESSED WOOD. AND THE PAINT ISN'T ORDINARY OILS BUT OILY PASTELS. SHE USES SUN TAN OIL INSTEAD OF LINSEED.

PAINTING AND KEEPING A MARINE AQUARIUM ARE JULIE BOOTH'S MAIN INTERESTS - AND THIS IS HER WAY OF LINKING THE TWO.

THE UNDERWATER ARTIST IS ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED SPEAR FISHERWOMAN. SHE WAS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION IN 1958-59. SHE'S A MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIA WIDE UNDERWATER RESEARCH GROUP, AND SUPPLIES MANY SPECIMENS TO THE SYDNEY MUSEUM.

ON THE SHORE HER HOLIDAY HUT HAS BECOME A STUDIO FOR THE FINISHING TOUCHES. JULIE BOOTH SELLS SOME OF HER PAINTINGS, AND GIVES OTHERS TO FRIENDS AND CHARITIES. WHILE LIVING IN SYDNEY, SHE PAINTED MURALS FOR THE SURF CLUB AT WARRIEWOOD.

UNDERWATER, BRUSHES REPLACE A KNIFE IN THE SHEATH ON HER LEG. JULIE BOOTH HAS FOUND THIS THE BEST WAY TO LINK HER INTEREST IN THE SEA AND IN PAINTING. SHE DESCRIBES HERSELF AS AUSTRALIA'S ONLY UNDERWATER PAINTER.
