  • Description

Anglers from five countries competed in the twelve-day Angling Festival which began July 3 in Clew Bay, Westport on the West coast of Ireland.

The 58 fishermen found the sea choppy and strewn with sea wrack churned up by the gale-force winds of the two previous days.

Heavy rain reduced visibility to about 100 yards and anchors had to be lifted early to enable the fishers to return to shelter. A large crowd welcomed them back to the quayside for the weighing of the catch which owing to the conditions was light.

Prince Baudouin de Ligne had caught only six small dogfish and skate, but still has high hopes of winning this International competition. Baron Descamps of Belgium was another competitor.

The largest individual catch out of the total of 1,328 lbs. 12 ounces was that of 114 lbs. by Mr. Peter Karn of Woking, Surrey, England. He also caught the heaviest fish of the day, a 51 lb. Monk-fish, otherwise known as Angel-fish, a member of the shark family.

Though the festival continues until July 12 at Westport, further competitions will be held at a number of European ports in the next few months, the angler with the greatest number of points at the end of that time will be European Champion.
