THE UNITED STATES LINE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) CANCELLED THE SAILING OF THE LINER "AMERICA" FROM NEW YORK TO EUROPE BECAUSE OF A DISPUTE WITH THE U.S.NATIONAL MARITIME UNION OVER ALLEGED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION BY ONE OF THE SHIP'S OFFICERS.

MR.JOSEPH CURRAN, PRESIDENT OF THE MARITIME UNION, CALLED THE 680 MEN OF THE LINER'S CREW FROM THEIR POSTS SHORTLY BEFORE SAILING TIME ON SATURDAY AFTER THE LINE REFUSED A DEMAND THAT AN ASSISTANT ENGINEER, MR.LOUIS NEUROHR, SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE LINER.THE UNION CHARGES THAT MR.NEUROHR REFUSED TO HAVE NEGRO CREW MEN ON HIS WATCH, AND PADLOCKED A TOILET TO PREVENT ITS USE BY NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN CREW MEMBERS.SOME 40 PER CENT OF THE CREW ARE NEGRO OR PUERTO RICAN.

MR.NEUROHR REMAINED ON THE SHIP THROUGHOUT THE DISPUTE AND SAID THE CHARGES OF DISCRIMINATION WERE TRUMPED UP.

THE 964 PASSENGERS REMAINED ON BOARD UNTIL LUNCH TIME AND THEN LEFT THE SHIP.ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION IS TO BE FOUND FOR THEM.
