  • Description

A TROUBLED CZECHOSLOVAKIA TODAY (THURSDAY) COMMEMORATED THE DEATH FIFTEEN YEARS AGO OF KLEMENT GOTTWALD, THE FORMER CZECHOSLOVAKIAN PRESIDENT. SOME 6,000 PEOPLE VISITED THE PRAGUE MAUSOLEUM TO LAY WREATHS, INCLUDING REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CZECHOSLOVAK GOVERNMENT.

THE MAUSOLEUM IN WHICH LIE GOTTWALD'S REMAINS STANDS HIGH ON THE VITKOV HILL IN PRAGUE. ABOUT A HUNDRED WREATHS WERE LAID DURING THE COURSE OF THE DAY, TO THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF MUSIC BY PROFESSOR KRESKY OF PRAGUE CONSERVATORIUM.

GOTTWALD FIRST CAME INTO POWER WITH HIS APPOINTMENT AS PRIME MINISTER IN 1946. TWO YEARS LATER, AFTER THE COLLAPSE OF THE NON-COMMUNIST OPPOSITION, GOTTWALD BECAME PRESIDENT AND RATIFIED THE CONSTITUTION OF THE 'PEOPLE'S DEMOCRACY'. MANY EXPRESSES THE VIEW TODAY THAT GOTTWALD WAS THE FOUNDER OF CZECH DEMOCRACY, AND WAS BASICALLY IN FAVOUR OF A SEVERAL-PARTY GOVERNMENT.
