  • Description

ISRAEL'S PRIME MINISTER GOLDA MEIR AND OTHER GOVERNMENT CHIEFS VISITED JERUSALEM TODAY (FRIDAY) AND INSPECTED THE FIRE-DAMAGED EL AQSA MOSQUE. ONE OF ISLAM'S MOST HOLY SHRINES. THE GOVERNMENT HAS APPOINTED AN ENQUIRY COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE THE DISASTER. MEANWHILE, AN AUSTRALIAN SHEEPSHEARER, MICHAEL ROHAN, HAS BEEN ARRESTED SUSPICION OF STARTING THE BLAZE.

THE MOSQUE FIRE DREW ARAB ACCUSATIONS OF A DELIBERATE ISRAELI CRIME AGAINST ONE OF THE HOLIEST ISLAMIC SHRINES. IT SPARKED CALLS FROM MOSLEM LEADERS FOR A JIHAD (HOLY WAR) TO RECOVER THEIR WORSHIPPING PLACES FROM ISRAEL.

EARLIER MRS GOLDA MEIR EXPRESSED DEEP SORROW OVER THE DISASTER, AND SAID A TEAM OF ENGINEERS WOULD ASSESS THE DAMAGE AND REPORT ON WHAT WAS NEEDED FOR REPAIRS. THE GOVERNMENT REJECTED ARAB CHARGES OF ARSON. IN AN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE IT DESCRIBED THE REPORTS AS A "VICIOUS LIBEL".

THE FIRE GUTTED THE SOUTHERN SECTION OF THE MOSQUE'S 500-YEAR-OLD ROOF AND DESTROYED AN 800-EAR-OLD WOOD AND IVORY IMAM'S (PRIEST'S) PULPIT. THE BLAZE WAS EXTINGUISHED BEFORE IT REACHED THE SILVER DOME OF THE SCARED EDIFICE. THE THICK-PILED PRAYER CARPETS ON WHICH MOSLEMS PROSTRATE THEMSELVES TOWARDS THEMSELVES MECCA WERE SALVAGED.

NEWS OF THE BURNING STUNG KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN INTO CALLING FOR AN IMMEDIATE ARAB SUMMIT MEETING TO PLAN THE DEFENCE "OF OUR RELIGION, HOLY PLACES AND TRADITION." THE MOSLEM COUNCIL, MEANWHILE, HAS CALLED FOR A GENERAL STRIKE TOMORROW (SATURDAY). IT URGED A "PEACEFUL" STRIKE AND ORDERED ARABS IN OCCUPIED AREAS TO STAY INDOORS.

JERUSALEM'S FIRE BRIGADE CHIEF SAID THE BLAZE MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY AN ACCIDENTAL SPARK FROM A WELDING MACHINE FOUND ON THE SCENE.

(THE ARRESTED AUSTRALIAN, AGED 28, IS BEING HELD IN CUSTODY. HE'S A MEMBER OF A CHRISTIAN SECT KNOWN AS THE CHURCH OF GOD.)
