  • Description

The Jordan Senators' Council, one of the two highest Jordanian legislative bodies, met in private session on Thursday (19 July) to discuss the cutting of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Tunisia.

The Jordanian cabinet broke relations in response to a statement by Tunisia's President Habib Bourguiba, who, in a newspaper interview, described Jordan as an "artificial state". He said Jordan's King Hussein should be prepared to solve the Middle East problem by giving up his kingdom to allow creation of a Palestinian state.

Last Tuesday, (17 July), a Jordanian Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Zeid Rifai decided to break relations with Tunisia.

Following their meeting, the Senators issued a statement saying that President Bourguiba had in common with Israel the aim of liquidating the Palestinian case by agreeing to Israeli control over the occupied territories.

The council backed the cabinet decision and said that any nation that wanted to have a role in solving the case of Palestine must previously have shown interest -- as Tunisia had not -- by making financial and political and military donations to the Palestinian cause.
