ON THE RIGHT, THE HOPPER FEEDS RAW NUTS AT THE RATE OF 40 TONS AN HOUR INTO THE BELT GOING UPWARDS TOWARDS THE TALL CRACKER IN THE BACKGROUND. HERE, A PORTION OF THE NUTS ARE CRACKED, SOME 10 PER CENT AT EACH...(INDISTINCT). THE CRACKED NUTS, TOGETHER WITH THE PARTIALLY CRACKED NUTS, ARE RETURNED ON THE CONVEYOR COMING TOWARDS US FOR THE FIRST AND FINAL SQUEEZE. HERE THE CRACKED NUTS' KERNELS ARE SEPARATED FROM SHELLS AND UNCRACKED NUTS. THE UNCRACKED NUTS ARE RETURNED TO THE CRACKER FOR FURTHER CRACKING. THE KERNELS ARE PASSED TO THE PNEUMATIC SEPARATOR IN THE FOREGROUND WHICH SEPARATES THESE FROM THE WASTE SHELLS, THE FINISHED KERNELS COMING OUT INTO TWO BINS IN THE FOREGROUND."

    WORLD CASHEW NUT PRODUCTION STANDS AT ABOUT 2000,000 TONS A YEAR -- AND EACH NUT IS CRACKED BY HAND. THIS LABORIOUS PROCESS IS ALSO DANGEROUS, BECAUSE THE SHELL OF THE CASHEW NUT CONTAINS A CORROSIVE FLUID WHICH SCARS THE HANDS OF THE CRACKER.

    THE RESEARCH AND DESIGN OF THE WORLD'S FIRST AUTOMATIC CASHEW NUT CRACKER WAS INSTIGATED BY THE BRITISH MINISTRY OF OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT AND WAS BUILT AT THE TROPICAL PRODUCTS INSTITUTE AT LANGLEY, IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE.

    INQUIRIES FOR THE MACHINE HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECEIVED FROM COLUMBIA, SIERRA LEONE, SENEGAL, GHANA AND THE FIJI ISLANDS.
