  • Description

A THIRD STRIKE BY NEW YORK CITY'S PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS IN LESS THAN SIX WEEKS PROMPTED A DEMONSTRATION LAST MONDAY BY PROTESTORS WHO WERE VOICING THEIR SUPPORT OF LOCALLY-CONTROLLED PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THE LATEST TEACHERS' STRIKE BEGAN LAST MONDAY, AND HAS ALREADY KEPT MORE THAN A MILLION PUPILS OUT OF CLASS. THE STRIKE WAS SPARKED BY THE RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS IN THE PREDOMINANTLY NEGRO AND PUERTO RICAN DISTRICT OF OCEAN HILL-BROWNSVILLE. THE TEACHERS ARE DEMANDING EMPLOYMENT PROTECTION FROM NEW YORK'S MAYOR JOHN V, LINDSAY AND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.

THE TEACHERS' UNION, THE 55,000-STRONG UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS, HAS CHARGED THAT THE DISTRICT'S GOVERNING BOARD ILLEGALLY FORCED 10 TEACHERS TO TRANSFER OUT OF THE DISTRICT LAST MAY AND REFUSED TO REINSTATE THEM ALTHOUGH THEY WERE CLEARED BY A TRIAL EXAMINER.

A LARGE NUMBER OF MONDAY'S DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED AROUND NEW YORK'S CITY HALL. THEY WERE STRONGLY OPPOSED TO THE TEACHER'S STRIKE WHICH THEY CLAIMED ATTACKED THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF NEIGHBOURHOOD-CONTROLLED PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THE PROTESTORS THEN MARCHED ACROSS THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE, INTERFERING WITH RUSH-HOUR TRAFFIC, FOR ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION IN FRONT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION HEADQUARTERS IN BROOKLYN.

THE DEMONSTRATION BROUGHT TOGETHER AN ESTIMATED 5,000 PARENTS, DISSIDENT TEACHERS AND MEMBERS OF YOUTH AGAINST WAR AND FASCISM AND STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.
