Background: Tennis....and a classic final in the American Colgate Grand Masters championship was set up on Saturday (7 January) when Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg both won their semi-finals matches. Playing at Madison Square Garden in New York Connors had to fight hard to beat fellow American Brian Gottfried 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. But Sweden's Bjorn Borg had little difficulty in defeating Argentinean Guillermo Vilas by a straight-set score of 6-3, 6-3.

SYNOPSIS: Connors, serving at the far end, has rarely lost to Gottfried. But the match didn't go all his way.

This point was taken by Connors although he lost the second set by a wide margin, bringing new hope to Gottfried's supporters.

In the deciding set Gottfried tried to press home his advantage and at one time had a 2-1 lead, but he couldn't sustain the attack. Connors took the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and guaranteed himself a good share of the 400,000 dollar prize money.

The biggest surprise in the other semi-final between Vilas, at the far end, and Bjorn Borg was that the Swede decided to play at all. Suffering from 'flu, he decided to take part only 45 minutes before the start of the match.

If Borg was feeling ill, he certainly didn't show it. But Vilas, with a damaged ankle, started by double-faulting three times and dropped his service twice to trail love-three.

Vilas never really recovered and although he broke Borg's service in the second set to make it 3-4 he couldn't get any closer. Borg won the final game without conceding a point and took the match 6-3, 6-3.
