    United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim arriveo in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Tuesday (29 June) for the 61st session of the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

    SYNOPSIS: Dr. Waldheim was accompanied by his wife and although their arrval was marred by heavy rain there was a warm welcome for the couple inside the airport terminal.

    Delegates came from many countries for the meeting and for some it was the first time they'd had the opportunity to meet Dr. Waldheim. The main theme of the Council's talks was to discuss ways and means of establishing worldwide economic stability.

    From the airport Dr. Waldheim went on to the residence of Ivory Coast's President Felix Houphouet-Boigny for informal discussions.

    Speaking to newsmen later in the day, Dr. Waldheim discussed the situation in Southern Africa, describing it as very serious. He went on to say that the gravity of the situation had been highlighted by the recent tragic events in the South African township of Soweto and assured newsmen that he and the United Nations were doing everything possible to help find a satisfactory solution.
