  • Description

THE TANKER "JOANNA V", LOADED WITH 18,000 TONS OF CRUDE OIL, BERTHED AT THE MOZAMBIQUE PORT OF BEIRA ON MONDAY CLOSE TO THE PIPELINE WHICH RUNS FROM THE PORT TO THE RHODESIAN OIL REFINERY AT UMTALI.

SINCE THE VESSEL BERTHED NO EFFORT HAS BEEN MADE TO UNLOAD THE OIL. THE MASTER, CAPTAIN GEORGE VARDINOYANNIS, TOLD NEWSMEN: "I CAME ALONGSIDE TO TAKE ON WATER - NOTHING MORE." ASKED WHETHER HE WAS PLANNING TO DISCHARGE THE OIL AT BEIRA HE ANSWERED - "NO. I DON'T COME HERE DISCHARGE OIL."
MEANWHILE, IN ATHENS, THE TANKER'S AGENT HAVE SAID THAT THE PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES IN BEIRA HAD PRESSED THE CAPTAIN TO UNLOAD HIS CARGO OF OIL AND LEAVE PORT BECAUSE THE SHIP WAS CAUSING CONGESTION AT THE DOCKS.

FROM BEIRA THERE ARE CONFLICTING REPORTS ON THE REASON FOR DOCKING THE TANKER - WHICH HAS BECOME A SYMBOL OF BRITAIN'S FOUR-MONTH-OLD CAMPAIGN TO KEEP OIL FROM REACHING HER BREAKAWAY COLONY. THE TANKER'S AGENT SAY THE SHIP HAS BERTHED TO UNLOAD SOME OF HER OIL SO SHE WOULD RIDE HIGH ENOUGH IN THE WATER FOR REPAIRS TO BE MADE TO HER PROPELLOR. BUT ANOTHER REPORT SAYS THAT THE VESSEL HAD TO MOVE INTO DOCK OR THE EBB TIDE MIGHT CAPSIZED HER.

MEANWHILE THE OTHER TANKER, MANUELA, WHICH WAS BOARDED BY BRITISH NAVY CREWS IN THE MOZAMBIQUE CHANNEL, HAS ARRIVED IN DURBAN AND IS REPORTED TO BE DISCHARGING HER CARGO THERE.
