SYNOPSIS: Buenos Aires Zoo has been closed for three weeks while veterinarians investigated a mystery disease which has killed many of its animals. Children waited to gain entry unaware that zoo officials had decided to keep the zoo out of bounds to the public for another week.

The dead animals include the zoo's only polar bear, five pumas, eight monkeys and several flesh-eating birds. First post mortem examinations suggested the animals had died from phosphorus which had contaminated their meat.

Veterinarians, however, are still mystified, because zoo officials have reported that another six animals have died since the post mortems. They ordered a thorough clean-out of cages with water brought in specially by tankers. But now keepers have threatened strike action after a zoo employee was taken ill and is now in hospital.

The Zoo, established in 1874 in a park in the Palermo gardens, houses a total of 300 animals and is normally visited by about 40,000 people each weekend.
