Background: AUSTRALIA SET A LEAD OF 129 ON ITS FIRST INNINGS IN THE MATCH AGAINST THE M.C.C. AT LORDS TODAY (MONDAY). BOBBY SIMPSON, THE AUSTRALIAN CAPTAIN, CLOSED HIS SIDE'S INNINGS 23 MINUTES BEFORE STUMPS AT 358 RUNS FOR SIX WICKETS.

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY WERE THE BATTING DISPLAYS BY NORMAN O'NEILL AND SIMPSON. O'NEILL AFTER A NOT TOO CONFIDENT START, DOMINATED THE M.C.C. ATTACK AND IN A FOUR HOUR DISPLAY OF IMPECCABLE STROKE-MAKING SCORED 151 BEFORE GOING LBW TO SYDENHAM. O'NEILL'S SCORE INCLUDED 15 BOUNDARIES.

SIMPSON SCORED 105 NOT OUT, AND HIS TALLY INCLUDED 17 BOUNDARIES. THE LAST 68 RUNS OF HIS INNINGS WERE SCORED IN AS MANY MINUTES. HIS PARTNERSHIP WITH O'NEILL PROVED A DELIGHT, ALTHOUGH IT ONLY YIELDED THE AUSTRALIAN "SKIPPER" 32 RUNS IN A PARTNERSHIP OF 116 IN 95 MINUTES.

THE ONE BRIGHT SPOT DURING THE DAY FOR THE M.C.C. WAS AN INSPIRED SPELL OF PACE BOWLING BY THE MIDDLESEX FAST BOWLER, JESS PRICE. HE CLAIMED THE WICKETS OF REDPATH, POTTER AND BOOTH FOR ONE RUN OVER TEN DELIVERIES.

THE M.C.C. FAILED TO CAPITALIZE ON THEIR SUDDEN ADVANTAGE OF 143 RUNS FOR FIVE WICKETS AND IT WAS LEFT TO SIMPSON AND O'NEILL TO DESTROY THE M.C.C. ATTACK AND PUT AUSTRALIA IN A VERY STRONG POSITION.

AT STUMPS IN THEIR SECOND INNINGS THE M.C.C. WERE 10 WITHOUT LOSS. BOYCOTT HAD SCORED 7 AND BOLUS 3.
