TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: CARR: "The murder of the Most Reverend Janani Luwum, Archbishop of the Anglican province of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire, by the Ugandan government security forces, is a crime that has caused shock, horror and outrage in the Church around the world. The report that his death was caused by a motor accident is as preposterous as the allegations levelled against him by President Amin. Archbishop Luwum is only one more victim of the wave of atrocities in Uganda, against which, we in the All African Conference of Churches, have consistently protested for a number of years. We are alarmed and terrified by indications that the murder of the Archbishop is part of a campaign of terrorist unleashed against Christians in Uganda. Once again we call upon President Amin to put an immediate end to these indiscriminate killings in Uganda. We reiterate the request that I sent to him yesterday that a delegation from the All-Africa Conference of Churches examine the evidence that lay behind the allegations brought against the Archbishop, particularly now enquire about the circumstances surrounding his death."

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Coggan, who described Dr. Luwum as a man of peace and courage, has echoed the fears expressed by Canon Carr. In New York, Andrew Young, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations described the death of Archbishop luwum as an assassination. In Geneva, the International commission of Jurists also said the deaths were an assassination. The official Tanzanian radio said in an editorial that the Ugandan account of the three deaths was "very difficult, if not impossible to believe". The Ugandans say the three men died when they tried to escape in a car after being named in a plot to overthrown President Amin.

Background: The deaths off the Archbishop of Uganda, Dr. Janani Luwum and two senior Ugandan cabinet officials on Tuesday (17 February) provoked a wave of international protest, unprecedented in the six-year rule of President Amin. The Ugandan government's claim that the three men died in a car ???rash on the way to being questioned was dismissed with disbelief. In neighbouring kenya, the West African leader of the All-African conference of churches, Canon Burgess Carr, said the church feared the deaths may be part of a campaign of terror unleashed against Christians in Uganda.
