  • Description

THREE YOUNG WHITE WOMEN, TWO OF THEM MOTHERS, SURRENDERED THEMSELVES FOR PRISON SENTENCES TO A JOHANNESBURG MAGISTRATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (TUESDAY). THEY WERE MRS. MARY TUROK, AGED 30, MRS. EVA HALL, 25, AND MISS MOLLIE ANDERSON, 27.

THE WOMEN HAD BEEN SENTENCED TO SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT FOR FURTHERING THE ENDS OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS AND ALLOWED BAIL WHILE THEY DECIDED WHETHER TO APPEAL AGAINST THE SENTENCE. THEY DECIDED FINALLY TO SURRENDER THEMSELVES AFTER MAKING ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN. A FOURTH WOMAN, SENTENCED WITH THEM, HAS YET TO DECIDE.

THEY WERE MET BY A SMALL CROWD OF AFRICANS, ASIANS, COLOUREDS AND WHITES AT THE DOOR OF THE COURT BUILDING. INDIAN WOMEN SCATTERED FLOWER PETALS ON THEIR HEADS AND EACH WAS GARLANDED. THEN, ONE BY ONE, ESCORTED BY A POLICEMAN, THEY ENTERED THE BUILDING. THE CROWD WAVED GOODBYE, SINGING "NKOSI SIKELE AFRIKA" (GOD SAVE AFRICA).
