  • Description

There were further demonstrations in Dublin on Sunday and Monday (November 26/27) in support of Sean MacStiofain, who has been on hunger strike since his arrest a week earlier for activities connected with the outlawed Irish Republican Army.

MacStiofain, described as Chief of Staff of the I.R.A. Provisionals, was sentenced on Friday to six months imprisonment for being a member of an illegal organisation.

His refusal to eat food or take water led to a swift debilitation in his health and he was placed in Dublin's Mater hospital under guard.

Thousands of people have taken part in demonstrations in an effort to get the Irish government to release MacStiofain.

On Monday, he was transferred to a military hospital. This followed an unsuccessful attempt by aimed raiders to get him out of the Mater.

There was some confusion about MacStiofain's medical condition. A statement issued by the hospital before his transfer said his condition was unchanged; that there was no real cause for concern. But MacStiofain's solicitor and others who saw him on Sunday, said his condition was "very grave".
