    The United Nations Children's Fund opened its East Africa Regional Staff Conference at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday (17 September).

    The conference, which continues until Saturday (22 September), was opened by Mr. M.M. Diwouta, the Head of the African Desk at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

    Among other subjects they discussed on the first day, was the future development of children and adolescents, and in the afternoon Mr. A. C. Tush, the U.N.E.S.C.O. Regional Adviser in basic Education in East Africa, introduced a discussion on assistance policies for basic and non-formal edition.

    On the second day, Tuesday (18 September), delegates reviewed the Special Studies undertaken in the East African Region. On Tuesday afternoon the Preview Meeting was opened. This section of the conference was to allow delegates to hear reports on various U.N.I.C.F.E. projects carried out in East African countries during the previous year.

    SYNOPSIS: The Africa Hall at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia provides the setting this weak for the East African Regional Staff Conference of the United Nations Children's Fund. Delegates from all over East Africa are attending the conference, which will continue until Saturday. It began on Monday, the seventeenth of September and was opened by Mr. M.M. Diwouta, the Head of the African Desk at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

    During the first day's business they discussed among other subjects, the development of children during adolescence. They also heard from the U.N.I.C.E.F. Regional food Conservation Officer, who told them that the amount of food lost between production and consumption was disturbingly large -- sometimes as much as twenty-five per cent. In the afternoon they discussed assistance programmes for basic and non-formal education.

    During the second half of the week, the Conference will consider the progress and future of special regional projects in East African countries.
