    THE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR MICHAEL STEWART, ALSO INTERRUPTED HIS HOLIDAY TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE AT THE PRIME MINISTER'S DOWNING STREET RESIDENCE. ALSO AT THE MEETING WAS LORD CHALFONT, FOREIGN OFFICE MINISTER OF STATE AND THE PRIME MINISTER'S REPRESENTATIVE DURING THE PARLIAMENTARY RECESS.

    LORD CHALFONT IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE SOVIET AND WARSAW PACT ENTRY INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA BY THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO LONDON, MR SMIRNOVSKY, EARLY THIS MORNING.

    THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS REPORTED TO VIEW THE SITUATION WITH GRAVE CONCERN. MR STEWART TOLD REPORTERS HE REGARDED THE NEWS AS SERIOUS, COMING AT A TIME WHEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR BETTER EAST/WEST RELATION EXISTED.

    THE MEETING AT NUMBER TEN LASTED FOR FORTY MINUTES, AND A STATEMENT WAS EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED LATER TODAY.
