SYNOPSIS: Riot police supported by armored cars were rushed to Istanbul University yesterday (Friday, 20 December) as students began to prepare a march through the city. This was the second day of unrest stirred up by left-wing students in Istanbul. The previous day, one student had died from knife wounds.

Police surrounded the campus as students walked out of classes and prepared to demonstrate in protest against the death of their comrade, a student at the school of architecture, who had died after a street fight in which he had been stabbed.

From the university, the students paraded through the police cordon and began marching through the city streets to a nearby square, where they were due to hold a rally. It was during the march that some students clashed with the police and arrests were made.

Turkish authorities and students have been on the brink of a head-on clash for some time. Several hundred left-wing students went on trial last month for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities. And the tension has been heightened by the debate surrounding American influence in Turkish affairs.
