Background: West German Minister of Finance and Economics, Helmut Schmidt, received a ceremonial welcome when he arrived at the Pentagon in Washington on Thursday (20 July) for talks with United States' Secretary of Defence Melvin Laird. A nineteen-gun salute was fired as Herr Schmidt arrived at the Potomac River entrance before inspecting a guard of honour.
Later, inside the Pentagon, Herr Schmidt became only the second non-American to be presented with a Defence Department medal for distinguished public service, and his work within the NATO Alliance. His talks with Mr. Laird included the status and level of U.S. troops in Europe, joint military exercises, co-operative research and development, and "common procurement" of weapon systems.

Minister Schmidt recently took over the post from Dr. Karl Schiller. Before assuming his new duties, Herr Schmidt served as the West German Minister of Defence. A longtime member of the Social Democratic Party, Herr Schmidt has always combined a party job with his current job.
