  • Description

JOMO KENYATTA, PRESIDENT OF THE OPPOSITION KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION PARTY, RECEIVED AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME FROM THOUSANDS OF HIS SUPPORTERS WHEN HE ARRIVED AT NAIROBI AIRPORT ON NOV 19. THE FORMER MAU MAU MANAGER WAS RETURNING FROM LONDON AND HIS TALKS WITH THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, MR MAUDLING, ON THE DATE OF KENYA'S INDEPENDENCE, AND A VISIT TO ETHIOPIA DURING THE FLIGHT HOME.

TEN THOUSAND OF MR KENYATTA'S SUPPORTERS BEGAN GATHERING AT THE AIRPORT HOURS BEFORE THE PLANE WAS DUE. DRUMMERS AND PAINTED DANCERS IN TRIBAL COSTUME CHANTED AND SANG, OTHERS WAVED POSTERS WELCOMING THEIR LEADER AND ATTACKING THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.

ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO GREET MR KENYATTA WAS THE GENERAL SECRETARY OF KANU, MR TON MBOYA. ADDRESSING THE WILDLY CHEERING CROWD ON THE TARMAC, MR KENYATTA DEMANDED FREEDOM FOR KENYA BY FEBRUARY 1, NEXT YEAR. "IF THE COLONIALISTS ARE NOT DELAYING OUR INDEPENDENCE," HE SAID, "LET US HAVE IT NOW." MR KENYATTA ADDED THAT THE VISIT TO LONDON HAD BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL AND THAT HIS DELEGATION WAS SATISFIED WITH THE TALKS. BUT HE CONTINUED: "WE WANT FREEDOM BY FEBRUARY 1 NEXT YEAR, AND WHETHER ANYONE LIKE IT OR NOT WE GOING TO ACHIEVE IT".

EARLIER, DURING A FIVE-DAY VISIT TO ADDIS ABABA, THE CAPITAL OF ETHIOPIA, MR KENYATTA SAID IN A PUBLIC ADDRESS THAT KENYA'S INDEPENDENCE WAS LONG OVERDUE. HE CLAIMED THAT MR MAUDLING HAD AGREED WITH HIM DURING THE LONDON TALKS.
