    SWEEPING CHANGES IN THE OLD IMAGE OF THE AFRICAN TOWNSHIP ARE TAKING PLACE THROUGHOUT ZAMBIA. THE FIELDS OF HOUSING, EDUCATION, AND SOCIAL SERVICES ARE NOW BRINGING BENEFITS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. ONE INSTANCE OF THE NEW MEASURES WAS THE RE-DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME NOW BEING PUT INTO ACTION IN KABWATA TOWNSHIP, LUSAKA. THE ZAMBIAN MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND HOUSING, MR. SIKOTA WINA, PERSONALLY TOOK PART IN THE FIRST STAGES OF A REBUILDING PROGRAMME IN THE OLD TOWNSHIP OF KABWATA.

    THE OLD TOWNSHIP WAS ONE OF THE PRIORITY LOCATIONS FOR MODERNISATION. RECENTLY MR WINA, ACCOMPANIED BY THE MAYOR OF LUSAKA, MR BANDA, JOINED DEMOLITION WORKERS ON THE SITE.

    MANY OF THE SINGLE ROOM BUILDINGS UNDER DEMOLITION HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN HOMES FOR AS MANY AS A DOZEN PEOPLE ALREADY MORE THAN 100 FAMILIES HAD MOVED FROM THE AREA TO BETTER HOUSING IN MATERU AND OTHER LOCAL AREAS.

    DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION IN A WHITE OVERALL AND GUMBOOTS, MR WINA STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RE-DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME. HE SAID: "WE ARE DESTROYING THE DIRTY AND UNFORTUNATE PARTS AND GIVING THE PEOPLE BETTER HOUSING FACILITIES.

    THE NEW HOUSES, WHICH WILL SOON REPLACE OLD KABWATA, WILL BE OF THE KIND THAT INCLUDE ALL MODERN CONVENIENCES.
