  • Description

Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of the American President, visited the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Division at Rockliffe, Ontario, May 17 and watched the famous red-coated "Mounties" at drill with their Horses.

The "Mounties", led by Inspector Downey, performed their traditional "Musical Ride" and afterwards Mrs Kennedy congratulated them all on the smart display.

Later that day, the President and Mrs Kennedy were welcomed at the Parliament Building in Ottawa by the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr Diefenbaker. In an address to Parliament, Mr Kennedy announced that the United States was willing to establish a North Atlantic seaborne force which was multilateral both in ownership and control.

He said the United States was willing to work out arrangements for control of American nuclear weapons that would be acceptable to other NATO countries.

The next day, at the end of the President's two-day state visit, he and Mr Diefenbaker issued a joint statement emphasizing what they called "their serious concern" over the development of a communist regime in the western hemisphere, threatening as it did the peaceful and democratic evolution of the Latin American people.

It was announced by the White House May 19 that Mr Kennedy will meet Soviet Prime Minister Khrushchev in Vienna on June 3 and 4. This would immediately follow the President's visit to President de Gaulle in Paris. He will fly to London late June 4. The next day he will lunch with the British Prime Minister, Mr Macmillan, and dine with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip before returning to America the same night.
