Background: INTRODUCTION: A 14,000 ton container ship, which ploughed into a concrete pier in Hong Kong harbour on Monday morning (12 October), killed two people and injured at least five others. Those killed were two children who were thought to have been fishing from the pier at the time.

SYNOPSIS: The container ship Sunshine Island was forced to veer off-course to avoid another vessel, moments before it collided with the pier.

After the collision, government officials warned that the wharf had been severely weakened and could collapse at any moment.

The first body to be recovered was that of a 15-year-old boy, found when police frogmen searched among the tangled, concrete wreckage. The body of another victim was discovered later in the morning.

Workers had to remove wrecked pipes and girders before the ship could be pulled clear of the pier.

But as the freighter was freed, the pier's end section suddenly toppled sideways and crashed into the harbour.

A full scale marine enquiry will be held into the accident but already there have been suggestions that harbour pilots should be made compulsory for all boats entering and leaving Hong Kong waters.
