  • Description

    Guerrilla leader
Yasser Arafat on Monday (October 5) visited Irbid, where the Palestinian
guerillas are still strongly entrenched after the cease-fire agreement of
October I, which called for demilitarisation of the northern towns, an immediate
cease-fire, and a halt to military operations. They say they will never withdraw
unless the army first withdraws from the area.

Yasser Arafat complained in a statement on Tuesday (6 October) of an alleged
cease-fire violation by the Jordanian army on Monday in the Harimah area, north
of the town. And Guerrilla spokesmen in Irbid have complained of a number of
minor violations of the cease-fire agreement. Arab cease-fire observers have
been investigating them. The mutual distrust between Fedayeen and troops in
Irbid is intense, but eh activity of the observers, and the fact that there is
physical disengagement between the two sides has helped to keep down the number
    of incidents.

Jordanian authority is represented in Irbid only by an officer of the security
forces. Otherwise the city has become a virtual Palestinian town. Armed Fedayeen
throng the streets, and there is a steady movement of guerrillas trucks and
    land-rovers.

On the edge of the town there is a narrow no-man's-land between the last
Fedayeen barricade and the first army checkpoint on the road to Mafrak.

Damage is relatively light, although the guerrillas claim that 8,000 shells fell
in the town during a prolonged army bombardment.

A Reuters eye-witness in Irbid claims that there has been no major destruction,
except on the edge of the town. At the Palestinian refugee camp on the outskirts
only a few of the mud and straw houses have been destroyed. Several burned-out
    vehicles litter the streets.
