  • Description

A strange vessel travelled through the North Sea to the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. Launched at Thorn by, Yorkshire, on 17th. May, by the youngest apprentice of a firm engaged in the boiler manufacturing industry, this craft was loaded with an atomic power station boiler, nearly a hundred feet long and twenty feet in diameter, called a heat exchanger.

Down the slipway went 200 tons of Teeside engineering, with special wooden casing fastened on to prevent its being damaged by heavy seas during the voyage. It could have carried eight double decker buses inside, and some spectators were sorry they'd under-estimated the wash such a bulk could produce. Difficulties met on the roads necessitated a more convenient method of transportation, so the manufacturers decided on the 300 mile long sea journey.

This boiler, which arrived at the new Bradwell power station on Monday 19th. May, is the first of twelve such giants to be installed.
